I Have This Really Large Cavity In The Back Of One Of My Front Teeth.?

I wasn’t able to take care of it when the hole started in the summer because I had no money. Finally got caught up on my bills last week & I have a dentists appointment for next Tuesday. Any chance that it might still just be fillable? And anything I can use to protect it in the meantime? I’ve been keeping it pretty clean, & it’s not all black, just a little brown, but it did start hurting a little this morning when I suck on my teeth. It doesn’t hurt on its own, just if theres pressure around it…

If you have an appointment for next week, there’s nothing you can really do in the meanwhile to protect it. If you get food stuck in it, you can buy temporary filling material from any drug store, which you can place in there as best as you can, but until the decay is removed, it is still going to progress. On the other hand, 1 week isn’t going to make a difference.
As for it possibly just needing a filling, maybe. If the decay is into the nerve of the tooth, you will need a root canal. The sites below have a bit more information on this if you’re interested.
Basically if the tooth ever hurts when you are not doing anything, or if it wakes you up at night, or if it hurts/throbs for more than a few seconds when stimulated (by eating, cold drinks, etc), you probably will need a root canal.
When your dentist cleans the tooth out, s/he will also very easily be able to tell if the tooth needs a root canal or not. And it’s not his or her decision, where the decay goes dictates if it needs one or not. It’s a common misconception that the dentist just decides to do a root canal, when the situation dictates itself.
Hope that made sense, & good luck.

Don’t eat any sugary products, soda, etc. Keep it clean & brushed after eating anything. Dentists today can work wonders so you should not worry until you see the dentist. Good luck.
